Brett majored in Business Management, Economics, and History

What was your first professional job after you graduated? Was it related to your major? If not, how did you discover this job?

My first professional job was at a law firm in Marietta, Ohio. It was not directly related to my majors at Muskingum, but was directly related to my law degree that I earned at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. I found my first job by calling numerous local law firms to attempt to intern with them over the summer of my 2L year. I got a call back from a firm and was given my first legal job there after passing the bar exam.

What do you do in your current job?

I am a partner at Cross Law Office, LLC. I practice law in a variety of fields, mainly focusing on criminal defense, civil litigation, and estate planning.

What advice about working in your career field do you have for students?

Stick to it. A law degree is a big committment, it takes around 7 years to complete the schooling, then you have to pass the bar. It can be exhausting at times, but keep pushing forward and you will get a rewarding career.
