About Michelle’s role at the American Cancer Society:
ACS CAN is the nonpartisan advocacy arm of the American Cancer Society. We champion evidence-based public policies to reduce the cancer burden for everyone. Through grassroots engagement, we empower volunteers nationwide to make their voices heard by policymakers at every level of government. Our core belief is that everyone deserves a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
In my role, I work to hold lawmakers accountable for advancing legislation or stopping harmful policies through strategic media advocacy. I collaborate closely with government relations directors, grassroots managers, policy experts, and other key stakeholders to design and execute campaigns that will improve the lives of those who hear the words, “You have cancer.”
Advice for students:
Do internships. Look into the Legislative Fellowship Program at the statehouse, intern with your state representative or senator, volunteer on a campaign, get involved with nonprofit advocacy work, anything to get your foot in the door and start making connections.
